Short Term Courses

Mary Mackillop Outreach offers a range of prevocational and general intersest training courses throughout the year. All programs are tailored to individual interests and capabilities.

Courses we offer include:

Introduction to Cafe Skills

Run in conjunction with Petersham TAFE, participants learn basic barista (coffee making) skills and customer service skills. The course aims to prepare participants for undertaking further barista courses through TAFE. A fun course which allows participants to develop new skills and drink some good coffee along the way!

Introduction to Upholstery

Taught by our qualified upholsterer, participants learn the basic techniques of upholstery in a supportive learning environment. In this introductory course, participants work at their own pace to upholster a foot stool. Participants will then have the opportunity to progress on to more complicated pieces of furniture, according to their ability and interests. A Certificate I in Furnishing is also available for interested participants.

Cooking for Independent Living

Run daily within our centre-based program, participants learn basic food preparation techniques to gain confidence in preparing food independently at home. Participants cook simple and nutritious meals, allowing them to practice recipe reading, basic cutting techniques, and different cooking methods. Participants also learn about the importance of healthy eating in a healthy lifestyle, and also safe food handling practices. And they get to enjoy a meal at the end!

Introduction to Beauty Skills

Conducted during our daily centre-based program, participants learn how to apply basic techniques of hairdressing, makeup application and manicuring to themselves and other people. The program aims to enhance participants' knowledge of health and beauty skills, as well as improving participants' self-esteem, confidence and body image. Run with the assistance of qualified hairdressers and beauticians.

Computing Basics

Participants learn the basics of using a computer in a supportive learning environment. Topics covered include correct start up procedure, using a mouse and keyboard, word processing and using the internet. Specific course components are tailored according to individual needs, abilities and interests.

Techniques in Visual Arts

Our highly experienced and trained Arts Coordinator has developed this program, delivered in a group setting as part of our centre program, but tailored to individual educational needs, abilities and interests. The course aims to expand participants' knowledge of different media and techniques, and also expose participants to a range of cultural and artistic experiences. This course is learning based upon visual, tangible arts, including painting, pottery, drawing and mosaics.

Coming soon: Picture Framing

A new project of our Men's Shed, this course will teach participants the basic steps involved in framing small paper and photographic items. Participants will learn how to design their own picture frame and actually make the frame itself. Details to follow shortly.
